Basalt

This hexagonal rock is from the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland. It is a volcanic rock called basalt and was formed 60 million years ago when Europe and north America as the Atlantic Ocean opened up.

Many minerals are found in volcanoes where heat and water concentrates them.
